A group of men in Estonia were shocked to rush to help a dog they found in the freezing cold river when they later discovered that the dog was only a fierce wolf.

The incident came after the workers at the Sindi dam on the Parnu River saw the dog "in the water" and quickly took a path to the animal and took him to one of their cars before they went to the veterinarian to examine him.

But while they were there, the doctor told them that their new four-legged friend was in fact a fierce wolf.

"When the wolf was brought, there was a drop in blood pressure, which could explain why the wolf was too stingy," the Lade Piebel quoted the Estonian Animal Protection Association (Bosta) as saying.

"It was a small weight," Rando Kartsoop, one of the men who picked the wolf, told the paper. "He was quiet, sleeping on my leg."

Veterinarians at the clinic initially suspected the dog might be a wolf, but only after a local fisherman saw him and confirmed that the animal was not a dog but a young wolf about a year old, the BBC reported.

Once it was proved that he was not a dog, veterinarians decided to treat him with caution and put him in the cage after his treatment, and when he woke up his movements and emotions were like wolves.

Subsequently, the National Environment Agency released the wolf in the wild after its treatment, after it had been provided with a tracking device.
