A stranger has opened fire in Aurora, Illinois, reportedly killing at least one person and injuring several people, including four police officers. A local investigative spokesman confirmed the death toll. At first, nothing was known about his identity.

Meanwhile, the police warned Twitter about an "active shooter" in the suburbs of Chicago and asked residents to shun the area.

Officials said the shots were fired on Friday at a water valve plant. TV stations showed police, rescue and fire trucks at the scene. Surrounding schools were temporarily sealed off. Shortly thereafter, the city announced on Twitter that the suspect had been caught.

At first, there were no official figures about the number of victims. The "Chicago Tribune" said in a report, citing the police control center of "many injured". The local daily "Daily Herald" reported that "four policemen and several civilians" had been wounded.

The incident sparked memories of the assassination in another location called Aurora, Colorado. There, a shooter had opened the fire in 2012 at a movie premiere in the hall, killed twelve people and injured about 70 others.
