A heavy onset of winter severely impacted traffic in parts of the US. In the US states of Missouri, Illinois and Kansas, there were already heavy snowfall on Sunday. Meanwhile, they move northeast into the states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana.

In the area around the metropolis of Chicago on Lake Michigan, the snow was more than 25 centimeters high in places during the night of Monday. The CNN reported that nearly 200,000 people in Illinois are without electricity, most of them around Chicago.

O'Hare Airport was also affected. According to the Chicago Department of Aviation, 809 flights were canceled between midnight and 10 am (local time). Flights were canceled at other Midwest airports. Snowstorms, ice and rain also affect the traffic in many places.

The onset of winter fell on the end of the long weekend after Thanksgiving last Thursday. Around the holiday, many Americans are traveling to visit relatives.
