The organizers of the Oscars said yesterday they had decided to back down from a plan to present four Oscars during ad slots at the Feb. 24 concert, following anger from Hollywood directors, actors and others.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said in a statement that it had "responded to the reaction" from members of the Academy and that all 24 Academy Awards "will be presented unchanged in our traditional form."

The Academy announced that the Oscars for the Best Short Film, Photography, Editing and Makeup will be presented during the event's advertising segments as part of a plan to reduce the duration of the show and increase its appetite for viewing on television.
