The Hague and Utrecht are going to ban air balloons

No more balloons will be allowed in The Hague and Utrecht soon. It is still unknown when the prohibition comes into effect and what kind of penalty will be imposed on it.

No more balloons will be allowed in The Hague and Utrecht soon. It is still unknown when the prohibition comes into effect and what kind of penalty will be imposed on it.

"The remnants of balloons are being eaten by fish, birds and other animals, and therefore cause a lot of animal suffering due to entanglement in ribbons or starvation after eating balloon remains", says alderman Richard de Mos from The Hague.

The Party for the Animals in The Hague had asked for the ban after Den Bosch had forbidden the release of balloons. The capital of Brabant did so after a much-criticized campaign by the VVD during a national party meeting in Den Bosch.

Chairman Klaas Dijkhoff then released five hundred balloons as a playful response to the criticism of his so-called pilot balloons. Zeist also recently banned the release of balloons.

Parties in Utrecht and Rotterdam also ask questions to the municipal council

The Party for the Animals in Utrecht asks the municipality on Thursday evening for a ban on the release of balloons in Utrecht and with the support of a majority of the city council.

In Rotterdam, too, questions are asked about the release of balloons. GroenLinks, D66 and the Party for the Animals have submitted questions. The Commission has promised to make a proposal to the Council in the short term for a ban on the placement.

In all cities, the General Local Regulation (APV) must be amended to ban the use of balloons. For that reason it is not yet known when the ban will take effect.
