A priority, yes, because each year, thousands of students struggle to find housing when starting the academic year. In the West, this was the case everywhere this year: in Rennes, Cholet, Angers ... A few weeks ago, Diplomeo, site specialized in the questions of orientation, released the results of a survey, two month after the start of the school year. Apartment, student residence or roommate? What budget? What difficulties? Answers in numbers.

"Even if some dream of freedom and independence at the end of the baccalaureate, they are sometimes forced to stay at dad-mum," says Diplomeo. One-third of the students surveyed still live with their parents (35%), 24% have chosen to take their own apartment, 16% have turned to the student residence or 12% are experimenting with the collocation.

Between 300 and 600 €

64% of young people who have their own home spend between 300 and 600 € per month, 19% managed to find renting accommodation below 300 €, 14% pay between 600 and 900 € and 3% between 900 and 1200 € . Rents vary greatly by city. The average rent of a studio is 872 € in Paris and 426 € in Rennes.

Between 15 and 30 m²

The average housing area of ​​the students surveyed is between 15 and 30m² (51%). 25% of them live in a dwelling between 30 and 60 m², 15% in a less than 15 m², and 8% in a more than 60 m².

15 to 30 minutes travel time

Regarding travel time, students prefer proximity to their place of study and precious extra minutes of sleep in the morning. 59% take between 15 and 30 minutes to go to their place of study, 23% between 30 and 45 minutes and 12% between 45 and 60 minutes. To get there, 79% use the bus to go to class against 16% for the car. 70% of young people have settled in the city where they study.

67% of students have struggled in their search

Places are often expensive and, for this fall 2018, they are 67% to declare having encountered difficulties in their research. At the head of the regions that caused the greatest concern: New Aquitaine, Ile-de-France and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. 69% were forced to make a compromise: the rent was too high for 73% of them, they ran into a shortage for 60% and their file was not accepted for 38%.
