A young policewoman died in an accident on a mission in Saarland. The patrol car of the 22-year-olds and a colleague had been involved in the morning in a search for a presumably drunk driver in Saarbrücken, said a spokesman for the police in Saarbrücken.

Other road users had previously reported him. During the mission, the woman sat as a passenger in the police car.

In a roundabout in the Saarbrücken district of Güdingen, near the border with France, the police car had strayed off the lane from previously unexplained causes. Other vehicles were therefore not involved in the accident.

The commissioner was released from the car by the fire department, but she died of her serious injuries at the scene of the accident. The policeman, who was at the wheel, was taken to a hospital in Saarbrücken, seriously injured. The spokesman gave no information about his age.

According to the police, the prosecution commissioned an expert to clarify the accident. The search for the presumed drunken motorist who had triggered the mission, so far was unsuccessful. Since it is said to have acted a car with a French plate, French investigators are involved in the search, said the police spokesman.

On Friday, a police officer was approached in Saxony when shooting an accident and seriously injured. The 54-year-old had passed the traffic on the A72 near Chemnitz after an accident on the left lane right at the danger spot. He was caught in the car of a 29-year-old, the police said.
