Germany's GPs want to be able to deliver prescription drugs to their patients.

This could "better use the resources, especially in the countryside," said the chairman of the German Family Physicians Association, Ulrich Weigeldt, the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung".

Currently, only pharmacies are allowed to hand over such medicines. Currently, doctors are only allowed to give their patients free medicines, for example, to relieve acute pain.

Weigeldt left open the question as to which medicines could be stored in medical practices in conversation with the newspaper. At any rate, having a complete assortment is not the goal. "We can not and do not want to replace the pharmacies," said medical representatives.

The chairman of the Health Committee in the Bundestag, Erwin Rüddel (CDU), was open to the proposal. One should not close oneself to new supply forms, he said the "FAZ". At the same time he warned against overburdening the family doctors. "Medical care is becoming a scarce commodity year by year, so I do not currently see the capacity for additional work with the doctors," said Rüddel.
