The German Association of Pharmacists warned that the use of nasal decontaminant spray for a long time may lead to addiction, as the swelling of mucous membranes lining the nose will only disappear through continuous use of the sprayer.

"The risk is that excessive use of nasal spray on the nose damages the lining of the nasal mucosa, which in turn raises the risk of bleeding and sinusitis," she said.

To avoid these risks, the Association recommends nasal spray at a rate not exceeding three times a day for approximately one week.

In order to stop using nasal sprays, the dose should be reduced gradually. Initially, nasal sprays can be used for infants and children, and only nasal spray with no salts and no active ingredients.
