The Documenta 15 will be a teamwork: The artist collective Ruangrupa from the Indonesian Jakarta will curate the next edition of the world-famous art show. This was announced by the responsible persons of Documenta in Kassel.
Ruangrupa, which consists of a solid core of 10 artists, succeeds Adam Szymczyk, who was the artistic director of Documenta 14 two years ago. But there may be more artists involved in the collective.
Szymczyk had been artistically and economically criticized: With its first two locations in Kassel and Athens Documenta 14 came to a deficit of 7.6 million euros and plunged into a crisis. Artistically, the concept was criticized in some places as too didactic and difficult to understand.

Elsewhere, however, it was praised that Documenta addressed the political context of both the exhibition itself and the works of art it presented, and presented old works on an equal footing with new ones. With more than a million visitors, so many people have come to the show as never before.
Since its first issue in 1955, the Documenta has grown steadily and has become the world's most important contemporary art exhibition. A similar scale can only be achieved at the Venice Biennale. Since 1972, the show takes place every five years. The Documenta 15 is planned from 18 June to 25 September 2022 in Kassel.
