For two years, the tigress had roamed the Indian state of Maharashtra, now she was shot dead on Friday after a large-scale hunt. The animal, which hunters had designated with the abbreviation T-1, is said to have killed a total of 13 people in the area around the Ralegaon forest. Animal rights activists christened the tigress Avni.

The Supreme Court had previously released the animal for shooting. In the meantime animal rights activists had tried to prevent the hunt, however no hearing was found, reports the BBC. Avni had two cubs.

About 200 people were involved in the action. More than a hundred camera traps were installed, horses and goats tied to trees as baits, and guards posted on viewing platforms. The hunters also tried to locate the six-year-old animal with baits.

Stunned or not stunned?

Finally, residents of a small village who wanted to see the animal gave the decisive hint. The hunters then lay down in a vehicle with a stunning rifle and a firearm on the lurking, reports the local forestry authority, according to the BBC.

At first, the tattoo gun had been shot at the tigress. After she was hit, she reportedly attacked the vehicle and was shot from about ten yards away. The tigress will now be examined more closely.

Two cubs

Animal rights activists complained on the Internet killing the tigress. Some residents of the region celebrated the death of the big cat against it.

In total, the tigress is attributed the death of 13 people. In seven of them, it could be proven with spear tests that a female tiger was responsible.

Tigers are threatened with extinction. 60 percent of the world's population lives in India. However, there are always incidents between humans and animals. In 2017, a tigress who reportedly killed three people died of electric shock.
