The European Council and the European Parliament today approved the exemption of British citizens from a visa to enter the territory of the Union after Britain left the bloc.

The European Council said in a statement in Brussels that after the British exit from the European Union, UK citizens coming to the Schengen area would be granted a 90-day stay in 180 days without a visa.

This agreement was confirmed by EU Ambassadors on behalf of the Council and the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament.

In accordance with the rules of the European Union, a visa exemption is granted on the condition of reciprocity.

The Government of the United Kingdom stated that it did not intend to apply for a visa from EU citizens traveling to the United Kingdom for a short stay.

The European Council cautioned that if the United Kingdom applied for a visa to citizens of at least one Member State in the future, the current reciprocity mechanism would be implemented and the institutions of the European Union and Member States would undertake to work without delay on the application of the mechanism.

OHCHR will monitor respect for the principle of reciprocity on an ongoing basis and immediately inform the European Parliament and the Council of any developments that may jeopardize respect for this principle.
