An attempted bank robbery in Brazil has killed at least 12 people, according to official figures. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the governor. Among the victims were six policemen.

According to the daily O Globo, the incident occurred during the night of Friday when banks in the northern Brazilian town of Milagres had already closed. Accordingly, the group of alleged perpetrators consisted of at least 30 people. The exact sequence is still unclear.

According to local media, the bank robbers blocked a street with a truck and stopped the car of a family they took hostage. There was an almost 20-minute firefight with the police, which killed the family and other people. The perpetrators had taken at least five people hostage, as the Legal Medicine in Milagres announced.
