A four-hour strike for security workers at the Tegel and Schonfeld airports in Berlin early Monday morning canceled some 55 flights and disrupted other flights, a Berlin airport spokeswoman said.

The German workers' union, Verdi, called on security workers at the airports to start the strike at 5 am local time to press the administration into wage talks due to resume on January 23.

Verdi spokesman Andreas Spellaneman said the union had demanded a pay rise from its current level of 17.12 euros (19.59 US dollars) in some areas to Germany's widespread level of 20 euros (22.88 dollars) per hour.
