The prosecution and police in Schleswig-Holstein have announced the preliminary results of the ballistic investigation into the death of a 39-year-old on New Year's Eve. The mother of three had been killed in Schönberg near Kiel by a shot.

According to the investigation, the shot was fired from close range. The Land Criminal Police Office came to this conclusion. The investigators exclude that the ball flew several hundred meters over the roofs of houses.

The autopsy revealed that the bullet came from a small caliber pistol. As the investigators announced, they continue on from a tragic accident and not from a targeted act.

The case had triggered nationwide horror. The woman had taken to the celebration of the turn of the year with her husband and her little daughter on the road and collapsed a few minutes after the turn of the year with a bleeding wound on the head. Without regaining consciousness, she died in hospital on New Year's Day.

Police want to determine firing direction with laser technology

Since February, there is a separate investigation team, which deals with the case. Using laser technology, officials have been trying to pinpoint the firing direction, according to the authorities. According to the LKA report, buildings, parked cars and vegetation restricted the field of fire.

Forensic scientists have also created a 3D scan for crime scene reconstruction. With their help, the police can now move in a virtual scene presentation and take measurements.

In the recent investigations, numerous owners of small-caliber weapons were visited and checked, abnormalities had not revealed. It was also the residents and their party guests from the New Year's Eve interviewed.

A reference portal, on which the police asked for private videos from the night, was only occasionally used. A poster campaign in January, however, have provided numerous clues. The police are now looking for other witnesses who have not been heard so far, who were staying near the crime scene on New Year's Eve.
