An Indian official said 13 people were killed and 19 injured when a speeding truck ran over a wedding procession in Rajasthan, northern India.

"A speeding truck ran over a wedding procession, killing nine people on the spot, while four others died after being taken to a hospital in the area," said Shiyam Singh Rajpuruhi, governor of Pratapgrah province, where the incident took place on Tuesday.

He added that 19 people were injured in the incident and were being treated in hospital.

Indian police have launched a search for the culprit, who fled to an unknown destination.

"It seems that the truck driver could not see the motorcade in front of him," said Vijyabal Singh Sando, deputy local police chief.
