COLOMBO (Reuters) - Anti-drug authorities have found half a tonne of cocaine hidden in home appliances that were to be sent on a cargo plane from Bogota to San Andreas, Colombian officials said on Sunday.

According to the police, the drugs belonged to the criminal gang of GulfClan and valued at about $ 4 million.

"The drugs were hidden in washers that had been modified to smuggle drugs," said police chief Fabian Cardenas.

The washing machines were subjected to security checks and were about to be loaded on an air cargo flight when the police decided to carry out an additional search for sniffer dogs.

The cocaine was on its way to the Colombian island of San Andreas, in the Caribbean off the coast of Nicaragua, and was supposed to be taken by boat to North America, the officer said.

No one was arrested despite the fact that the operation was one of the biggest drug operations detected at Eldorado International Airport in Bogota.
