The death toll from the earthquake in the central Sulawesi region of Indonesia at the end of September rose to 2,113 people and 1,309 people still missing.

"Up to 1,703 of the dead were from Balu, the capital of the province, and the rest are from Dongala, Seiji, Parigi Muttung and nearby Baangang Cayo provinces," said Sotobu Nogroho, spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency.

He explained that public life returned to normal after the electricity and telecommunications networks returned to work almost completely.

Some 22,375 people were displaced and 4,612 others were injured after the September 28 earthquake, which triggered a tsunami and landslides that swallowed thousands of homes.
