Mayor of Kushiro, Hokkaido Requested Nippon Paper Industries to continue business At 15:15 on November 13, when the Kushiro Mill was announced to withdraw.

Following the announcement that the major paper manufacturer "Nippon Paper Industries" will withdraw from the paper manufacturing business at the Kushiro Plant next year, Mayor Etsuna of Kushiro City visited the head office in Tokyo on the 13th and requested the president to continue the business.

Nippon Paper Industries, Ltd. announced on the 5th of this month that it will withdraw from the production of paper for newspapers and magazines at the Kushiro Mill, which started operations 100 years ago, in August next year.



In response to this, Mayor Hiroya Ebina of Kushiro City visited the Japan Paper Headquarters in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo on the 13th with Chairman Sadamasa Kuribayashi of the Kushiro Chamber of Commerce and Industry and met with President Toru Nozawa.



The visit was held privately for about an hour, and Mayor Etsuna requested that the withdrawal policy be reconsidered and the business continue, saying that it would have a large impact on the local economy.



In response, President Nozawa said, "I accepted the opinions of the locals," and explained that withdrawal was a tough decision and that the employment of about 250 employees would be maintained by reassignment. ..



After the visit, Mayor Etsuna said, "Nippon Paper Industries has an extremely large presence, and we would like to continue to appeal for the survival of the region as one."



Kushiro City will set up a council with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Michi next week to investigate the impact of the withdrawal on the local economy by conducting questionnaires to business partners.
