The winner of the Tour de France 1980, the Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk, was involved in an accident on Sunday morning, in the Paris region, and had to be hospitalized for several fractures, we learned from his family.

Joop Zoetemelk, 73, was hit by a car while on a bike ride.

The Dutchman was transported to Créteil hospital (Val-de-Marne) for fractures to both legs and an arm.

"He has lost blood but, fortunately, his life is not in danger," another former Tour winner, Bernard Thévenet, who had Joop Zoetemelk's wife on the phone told AFP.

1985 world champion, Joop Zoetemelk was one of the privileged opponents of Eddy Merckx first, then Bernard Thévenet and Bernard Hinault.

Along with Jan Janssen (1967), he is one of the two Dutch to appear on the Tour winners.
