In response to the US sanctions, Iran has implemented, since May 2019, a plan to reduce its commitments, the last step of which was taken last month. Sprains that worry the signatory countries, to the point that France, the United Kingdom and Germany trigger, on January 14, the dispute settlement mechanism.

If this mechanism, provided for in the agreement, could ultimately lead to the reinstatement of sanctions by the UN Security Council, the Europeans assure that this is not their objective. The aim is above all to preserve the agreement, according to them.

Iran is asking them for solid economic guarantees to limit the impact of American sanctions. On this point, if there is not yet a solution, the Iranian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs welcomed, at the end of the meeting, the will of the Europeans to strengthen the barter mechanism called Instex so that it covers a significant part of trade between Iran and the European Union.

" We remain open to any initiative that can guarantee Iran the benefits of the agreement, " added Abbas Araqchi, explaining that in return Iran would be ready to reverse the measures taken to disengage from the agreement.
