At eight days of legislative elections in Israel, the outgoing prime minister promises to annex part of the Palestinian territories in the event of re-election. Every day, Benjamin Netanyahu wants to dominate the public debate, to invite himself in the news and in the newspapers. After his failed attempt to equip Likud observers with cameras in Arab polling stations, after revealing the existence of a new nuclear production site in Iran, he now proposes to annex some of the Palestinian territories.
" Today, I announce my intention to impose Israeli sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and the North of the Dead Sea as soon as the next government is established ," said Benyamin Natanyahu.
The Jordan Valley is a strategic zone on which there is a broad consensus in the Israeli political class: in the event of a peace agreement with the Palestinians, it must remain under Israeli control. The head of the government now considers the conditions for annexation and promises to make it one of the first measures of the next government if he is re-elected.
On several occasions during his speech, Benjamin Netanyahu asked the Israelis to give him a clear mandate. While the outcome of this election is very uncertain, he seeks to mobilize behind his name the electorate right. Last April, at the end of the last campaign, he had already promised an annexation of large swathes of the West Bank. A strategy to avoid the scattering of right-wing voices.
