Of these, two have already started the first phase of experimentation, which requires healthy volunteers. It is however difficult to predict, he explains on his site, when they will be ready. Based on available information and past experience, it is estimated that it may take at least a year before having a vaccine ready to be approved and available in sufficient quantities for widespread use.

The Covid-19 response team of the European Medicines Agency is in contact with the developers of around 40 coronavirus drugs. To date, based on preliminary data submitted to the agency, no medicines have yet shown efficacy.

Potential treatments undergoing clinical trials include: remdesivir; lopinavir / ritonavir (currently authorized as an anti-HIV medicine); chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine (currently authorized nationally as treatments for malaria and some autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis); systemic interferons and in particular beta interferon (currently authorized to treat diseases such as multiple sclerosis); monoclonal antibodies.
