On the night of November 22, 2004, Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko, who estimated the CEC to lose the second round of elections, urged his supporters to rally and demand the cancellation of the vote. Activists brought in from the western regions of the country actively participated in thousands of actions, as well as representatives of nationalist organizations and NGOs. Because of the color of the symbolism used by Yushchenko’s political strategists, the events were called the Orange Revolution. Under pressure from the street and Western politicians, the Ukrainian authorities were forced to make concessions to the protesters. The Supreme Court has appointed a “third round of elections” not stipulated by the Constitution, as a result of which Yushchenko took the presidency.
