Indonesia's state-owned airline Garuda has canceled a billion-dollar order for a Boeing 737 Max passenger aircraft.

The airline justified this on Friday with lost confidence after the crash of two identical aircraft with a total of more than 340 deaths in the past six months. One of the crashed aircraft belonged to the Indonesian low-cost airline Lion Air, the other of the Ethiopian airline Ethiopian Airlines.

Garuda is the largest airline in the Southeast Asian country. The value of the now canceled order is listed at more than four billion euros . So far, Garuda has only one such machine of the US company Boeing in their fleet. It is believed that the aircraft is now being sold or returned to Boeing. The order for a total of 50 machines came from 2014.

The Boeing 737 Max 8 of the competitor Lion Air had crashed into the sea on 29 October shortly after taking off in Indonesia's capital Jakarta. All 189 inmates were killed. The crash of an identical machine in Ethiopia killed 157 passengers and crew this month.
