Two dead in US strikes against pro-Iran armed groups in Iraq

American forces claim to have carried out several simultaneous air attacks during the night against the positions of armed groups close to Iran.

Described as retaliation for attacks against bases housing American soldiers in Iraq, they left at least two dead.

Shortly after midnight, several strikes were heard in Jurf el-Sakhar, about fifty kilometers south of Baghdad,

and at least one other, in Qaïm, near the Syrian border.

Any doubt is quickly removed since the United States publishes, particularly quickly, a press release claiming responsibility for these airstrikes.

They claim to have targeted three positions belonging to Kataeb Hezbollah, a faction affiliated with the former Hachd al-Chaabi paramilitaries, and other armed groups close to Iran.

Among the targets: headquarters, storage buildings, and places for training rockets, missiles and drones.

This is not the first time that the United States has targeted them, but these synchronized strikes exceed the scale of previous responses to attacks against the American army in Iraq.

Last Saturday, ballistic missiles were used for the first time to attack a base housing American soldiers.

These bombings, explained Lloyd Austin, American Minister of Defense, are "

in direct response

" to a series of attacks carried out by "

militias sponsored by Iran

" against the American military and the troops of the international anti- jihadists in Iraq and Syria.

The reactions were not long in coming last night.

Several armed groups have called for continuing or intensifying attacks against US positions throughout the region.

Since mid-October, more than 150 drone attacks or rocket attacks have targeted American soldiers and those of the international coalition deployed in Iraq and Syria to fight against the Islamic State (IS) group.

These attacks were claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a network of fighters from pro-Iran armed groups.
