ArcelorMittal asks for state aid to make steel "green"

In short, this is what ArcelorMittal expects, according to statements by the CEO of the Mediterranean branch of the steel giant, in order to be able to drastically reduce its CO2 emissions and produce “green” steel.

“Green” steel refers to steel produced in a way that reduces CO2 emissions associated with its manufacture, which uses coal and therefore emits carbon.

In 2019, the group set the objective of reducing its emissions by 30% by 2030 in Europe and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

"This evolution, we cannot do it alone"

"This development cannot be done alone, [...] to achieve this, we will need the support of public policies, whether at European or national level", explained Bruno Ribo, CEO of ArcelorMittal Méditerranée during a press conference on the Fos-sur-Mer site.

The group hopes "both aid for these massive projects" and also "a regulatory framework that makes it possible to correct the distortions of competition between what is happening in Europe and then the competitors who are outside Europe and do not face the same constraints linked to this implementation of decarbonization, ”he added.

In particular, the group prepared funding requests for the EU Innovation Fund, which supports low-carbon projects.
