“Lettuce” is more than doubled and vegetables are high due to lack of sunshine and long rain 1:12 on August 12

The prices of major vegetables are all high, with the retail price of lettuce, which has been affected by lack of sunshine and heavy rain last month (July), more than double the normal price.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries surveys the retail prices of 8 types of vegetables such as green onions and cabbage every week at 470 stores nationwide including supermarkets.

As a result, the national average retail price of last week was more than doubled at 891 yen for "lettuce" per kilogram compared to the normal year, and 648 yen for "potato" was 648 yen, and "cabbage" was 68% higher. All eight types were higher than normal, with 55% higher at 245 yen and "cucumber" 41% higher at 723 yen.

This is because the supply was reduced due to poor growth due to lack of sunshine and heavy rain last month, and poor harvest work.

In addition, there was a demand for school meals due to the shortened summer vacation, which is also a factor in the price increase.

Regarding the outlook for the future, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said, “Cucumbers, eggplants, tomatoes, etc. are at their peak prices now, and it is expected that the prices will settle down in the future due to the recovery of the weather. May continue.”
