The air travel in Spain fell in June by 91% compared to the same month last year . This means that 359 thousand passengers have used this means of transport compared to the almost 4 million who flew in June 2019. This is reflected in a report by the INE on the Passenger Transport Statistics.

Inter-island trips by plane were reduced by 69.6% and the connection between the islands and the peninsula suffered with 91.8% fewer travelers than the same period of the year. Flights on the peninsula sank to 2.9% of those in June of last year.

The statistics reveal to what extent the coronavirus pandemic has affected passenger air transport, since it blocked the arrival of tourists, more than half of them fly on low-cost airlines, at the beginning of the high season in the peninsula and the islands.

Due to the shortage of travelers, since only essential flights were operated (freight transport and repatriation) during the state of alarm, Spanish airlines are on the ropes. For this reason, Air Europa is going to request a rescue due to red numbers of 400 million and Iberia has requested liquidity for close to 1,000 million euros after suffering the parent company (IAG) losses of 3,608 million in the first half of 2020. Both airlines They are in a merger process that depends on Air Europa being able to receive public aid to stabilize its financial situation.

Luis Gallego, president of Iberia . he believes passenger demand will not recover to pre-pandemic levels until 2023 "or 2024.
