UN - DR Report

At the start of its report, UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) obviously recalls the importance of electric vehicles in the fight against greenhouse gases. But the main objective of this publication is to warn against the dangers linked to the extraction of raw materials used for the production of batteries.

We can read on page 46: “It is estimated that up to 40,000 children work in extremely dangerous conditions, with inadequate safety equipment, for very little money, in the mines of southern Katanga. Children are exposed to physical risks and psychological abuse in exchange for a meager income intended to provide for their families. "

2025 target

UNCTAD further specifies that “The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo recognizes these problems of child labor in the mines. And that the practice is expected to disappear completely in 2025. Finally, the report also raises awareness of the pollution linked to these mining operations. The drainage of mining acids contaminates rivers in particular, and sometimes even water normally suitable for consumption.
