The Covid could limit, or even end, the practice of carrying carry-on luggage inside the plane. EASA, the European Aviation Safety Agency, advises in its letter of recommendations to the sector before Covid, that luggage be checked in better.

Many airlines, including Iberia, Vueling, Air Europa and Ryanair , have joined these recommendations from EASA and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), whose objective is to facilitate the recovery of air transport within the European Union and with the rest of the world, in a safe environment.

These are only recommendations, not prohibitions , and it is up to each country and each company to decide whether or not to adhere and what measures they implement and which they do not. Aena and its entire airport network have joined this protocol. Sanitary controls have been implemented at Spanish aerodromes, coordinated by the Foreign Health service of the Ministry of Health, but, in addition, airlines are implementing their own hygiene measures.

Iberia, Iberia Express and Vueling, from the IAG group (to which British Airways also belongs, for example) have adhered to this series of recommendations. For the three airlines "the priority is to offer their customers a safe experience , and that is why they are applying all the recommendations of those responsible for Health and Safety in Europe."

Baggage handling

Among the measures, it is recommended "to check in carry-on baggage to reduce contact on board" . This prevents the crew from having to manipulate the suitcase to put it in the compartment, for example.

"Since the start of the pandemic, the companies of the IAG Group in Spain have implemented all the prevention measures recommended by the authorities, from information, cleaning and disinfection, protective equipment, changes in procedures, among others," they point out.

Air Europa has also adhered to this letter, so it recommends checking in luggage. "In this exceptional situation, we invite you to check in your carry-on luggage for free. This measure will make your access through security filters, boarding and disembarking as comfortable as possible for you, helping us to reduce handling elements and objects on board" .

As for the low-cost airline Ryanair , the airline that moves the most passengers in Spain, "it has not changed its policy regarding baggage check-in . " Although, within its measures, "it recommends passengers to check in fewer luggage bags."

The fare for this will depend, in turn, on the fare chosen by the passenger, since, since the change in Ryanair baggage policy, only one item is allowed on board per passenger unless the Priority fare is purchased .
