Cultural and sporting events canceled due to Covid-19 may result in a credit for next season rather than a refund. - IStock / City Presse

You were to attend a concert, an exhibition, a festival or a match this spring or this summer? Many projects fell through due to the coronavirus health crisis. Can we be reimbursed in the event of cancellation? It is a legal obligation for any professional unable to provide the paid service.

The problem is that the organizers have a hard time coping with these massive demands. To alleviate the problem, certain theaters notably offer postponements of dates rather than cancellations. But it is not always possible.

A credit for 2021

The Ministries of Culture and Sports have therefore decided to preserve the cash of professionals by following the same path as their counterpart in Tourism. Thanks to an ordinance of May 7, 2020, cultural and sporting players, whether companies or associations, are exceptionally authorized to offer spectators a valid credit for an equivalent service that will take place during the season 2021, instead of the reimbursement of tickets or subscriptions. This measure also applies to sports halls and gymnasiums which can offer a credit valid for six months in the event of termination of the contract.

This departure from the rule concerns all artistic performances, sports competitions and festivals canceled between March 12 and September 15, 2020. If you do not wish to benefit from this proposal, you will have to wait for the ticket office to open for the next edition of the event to obtain a refund.
