• System sustainability: the private sector loses weight in the economy but supports three million more people than before the crisis

Officials and public workers want the government to sit down to negotiate new wage increases, more employment and rights . And for this reason, the CCOO Public Area and the Federation of Public Services of the UGT have sent this Tuesday a joint letter to the Executive in which they transfer what their requirements are "which, as a priority, should be part of the social dialogue table "

In the document, which has been sent to the 2nd Vice President and Minister of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda, Pablo Iglesias, to the Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, and the head of Territorial Policy and Public Function, Carolina Darias, the unions expose the they need to defend Public Services, a " fundamental pillar ", they point out, "today more than ever demonstrated in the unprecedented crisis we have been suffering from Covid-19".

In addition, they ask "to complete the stabilization and consolidation processes, to lower the temporary employment rate, as well as to eliminate the replacement rate to respond to the urgent needs for a structural increase in the workforce , having clearly proven insufficient." And as a third requirement, they point out that it is "essential to continue on the path of recovery of purchasing power and labor rights of female and male employees also cut in the previous crisis."

End of the previous agreement

The document of the unions recalls that "this is the last year of validity of the II Agreement for the improvement of public employment and working conditions signed on March 9, 2018." By virtue of this multi-year plan, which was signed with the then Minister of Finance and Public Function, Cristóbal Montoro, despite the fact that the Pedro Sánchez Government has tried to make it its own, important job offers and the salary of officials has risen noticeably in the past three years.

In fact, in the current year, public wages have risen by at least 2% , a figure that is much higher than the probable negative inflation that the crisis will cause. And, predictably, the number of public workers will exceed the all-time high it set in 2011 as the job offers already approved are completed.

This situation contrasts with what is happening in the private sector , where the crisis has already unleashed numerous layoffs, millions of workers with temporary employment regulations and the fear that the labor market will take several years to recover, just pre-pandemic levels.
