The cold shower for some French people. While taxpayers have until early June to complete their 2020 tax return, some have been pleasantly surprised to learn that they will receive a refund. But for others, the tax authorities claim an additional sum from them.

Why do some people have to pay more money to the Treasury when our taxes are now deducted at source? The reason is quite simple.

Adjustments every year

In 2019, the rate of withholding tax was calculated on your last declared income. Since 2018 is a “white year”, the withdrawal rate was calculated on your 2017 income.

Three cases are then possible: if your income is the same, nothing changes. If your income has dropped, you will receive a refund from the tax authorities. On the other hand, if your income has increased, you will have to pay a supplement to the Treasury. And it will be like that every year.
