Air transport is struggling. And it should not return to its pre-epidemic level Covid-19 in 2023 with first a restart on domestic routes this summer followed by a much slower recovery of international traffic. The International Air Transport Association (Iata), which brings together 290 airlines, estimates that traffic in 2021 (measured in paying passenger kilometers, RPK) should be 24% lower than in 2019, based on a recovery which would begin in the third quarter of 2020 with the reopening of domestic routes.

But the recovery depends on the speed at which the borders will reopen and the pace of global growth and the impact on the long-haul travel segment "will be much more severe and last longer," said the organization. In a more pessimistic scenario, where traffic restrictions would persist in the third quarter of this year, Iata envisages traffic in RPK down 34% would initially make their trips to stays in 2021.

The Iata favorable to the wearing of the mask by plane

According to a survey carried out by Iata, 58% of the passengers questioned would initially limit their journeys to stays in their country. "This makes common health security measures for air travel even more important," commented Iata director general Alexandre de Juniac, fearing the impact of unilateral measures. According to him, discussions are under way at international level to determine a certain number of control measures and common sanitary measures.

Iata argues in favor of the combination of different measures - including the wearing of a mask and the control of passenger temperature - while waiting for the arrival of a vaccine, immune passports or Covid-19 tests, which can be used at large scale. The organization declares, however, completely opposed to quarantine measures for arriving passengers. According to her, "69% of travelers would refuse to travel in the event of a 14-day quarantine", according to a passenger survey.

In Spain, people arriving on the territory from abroad will be subject to a quarantine of 14 days from Friday and throughout the duration of the state of emergency.
