In the midst of the olive oil price crisis, with farmers protesting for weeks to denounce fairer prices, the Facua consumer association publishes a study that reveals huge differences in the price of the carafe of extra virgin olive oil depending on from the supermarket where it is bought.

The association has analyzed 51 brands of olive oil in six supermarket and hypermarket chains. According to this study, the same brand of oil can vary its price up to 81% depending on the establishment. The difference can be up to two and a half euros per liter. In total, 181 plastic or can packaging products between one and five liters in Alcampo, Carrefour, Dia, Hipercor, Eroski and Mercadona have been analyzed.

The study detects important price differences between the same types of oil on different surfaces, but also between the same brands. It is the case of Borges, whose one-liter container can be purchased at 3.99 euros in Alcampo, its cheapest price, and 4.95 euros if it is in Eroski, which represents a price difference of 24%.

Facua says that "the huge price differences can respond in certain cases to commercial strategies of the distribution chains , which use extra virgin olive oil as a hook product in their advertising campaigns to make consumers believe that all products are especially cheap in their establishments ".

The Government approved last week the reform of the law of the food chain with the aim, among other things, of ending some bad practices, such as using products such as oil or milk as a claim to attract consumers.

According to the Facua study, the biggest difference in prices between packages the same brand is in the five-liter format of Hojiblanca extra virgin oil, which costs 13.78 euros in Alcampo and 24.95 euros in Carrefour, which is a 81.1% difference, which is more than 11 euros.

The organization also detects differences between the Spanish and Carbonell brands, in the case of the second one, there are price differences of up to eight euros depending on whether it is purchased at Carrefour, where it costs 12.65 euros, or at Alcampo, where the price It amounts to almost 21 euros.
