Dozens of Aena workers report that they have semicircular lipoatrophy problems after the works carried out in the building where they work. Specifically, they say, it affects more than 8% of the almost 900 workers in the Piovera Azul building in Madrid, rented by Aena. They have written a letter to their president, Maurici Lucena, in which they express the health problems they are experiencing after the remodeling of the property.

Semicircular lipoatrophy is an injury, attributable to working conditions, which consists of an atrophy located in the subcutaneous adipose tissue that is characterized by the appearance of deformations on the surface of the skin and that can occur in different areas of the body.

The Aena workers say that the origin of these ailments is "in the actions carried out in this building, a fast work (carried out with workers inside) and presumably with poor quality materials in which they have not been taken into account none of the studies and warnings that must be considered to avoid what is known as a sick building, " says the letter sent to the president and signed by 338 workers.

In the letter sent to the president they describe the symptoms they suffer from: "frequent headaches, dizziness, hypertension, arrhythmias , palpitations, fatigue, hormonal alterations, problems in the skin, eyes and joints." They denounce "severe cases of allergic skin reactions", those of workers who have lost their menstruation and others with menopause who have "have hormonal levels of women who ovulate."

Aena, on the other hand, points out that the number of reported cases of semicircular lipoatrophy is 32, of which 10 have been discharged, "which means that there are currently 22 cases out of a total of 898 workers who lend their service in the building of Piovera ".

Measurements

"Aena in permanent coordination with the Health and Safety Committee of the company, and when it proceeds with the lessor of the Piovera building, has and has had at all times, the maximum interest in analyzing and resolving issues related to health, the comfort and well-being of the people who work in the Piovera building, "says the company.

As he acknowledges, most of these cases occurred in the period between August and November 2018, after the completion of the building remodeling work, "period in which the relative humidity could not be maintained around 50%, as recommends the protocol of the Community of Madrid. This aspect has already been solved and is verified by daily measurements, "they say.

The employees, however, denounce that "Aena has not taken any serious action to reverse the situation." They criticize that the actions proposed "include the creation of a mailbox to communicate matters related to the level of CO2, lighting or temperature, or install CO2 measuring devices."

They consider that the measures are insufficient and that "the patients get worse every day," they say. In addition, they say that they have been waiting for a solution for more than a year and say that "if the company is not willing to reverse the works carried out or use higher quality materials, the workers ask for a building relocation."

Aena insists that it has carried out other measures such as "the change of work chairs to antistatic chairs, put the tables to ground (so that the electrostatic charge of the same goes to the ground instead of the table of the work), limit electromagnetic fields, perform measurements of electrostatic fields and prepare reports on air quality and jobs with a specialized company, among others.
