From our correspondent in Jerusalem,

It is a personal invitation that Benyamin Netanyahu received this Tuesday. On March 17, the Israeli Prime Minister must be present at the opening of his trial for the reading of the indictment.

Two weeks after the parliamentary elections , he should still head a government to deal with current affairs and will thus become the first incumbent Prime Minister in the history of Israel.

The start of this trial will take place while political negotiations are underway with a view to forming a new government. Benyamin Netanyahu obtained from his right allies a new commitment to support him in this phase. But how long will this agreement last? The images of him in court risk weakening him politically.

The announcement of this date also puts these court cases at the heart of the campaign. On Tuesday, his main rival Benny Gantz said in a campaign rally that from March 17, " Netanyahu will only be concerned about him. He will not be able to look after the interests of the citizens of Israel, ”he said.

The Deputy Minister of Defense, a member of Likud of Benjamin Netanyahu, believes, conversely, that the head of government is capable of managing a trial and his role as Prime Minister.
