Shoichiro Kobayashi, president and chairman of Kansai Electric Power, has died on the 4th of the 20th since the 1970s due to illness. I was 97 years old.

Kobayashi was born in Osaka Prefecture and joined Kansai Electric Power Company, a predecessor of Kansai Electric Power Company in 1947. After working in Kansai Electric Power in sales, planning and secretarial departments, he became senior president and vice president before becoming president in 1977.

With the two oil shocks in the 1970s increasing the need for a de-oiling strategy in Japan, Kansai Electric Power Co., Ltd. combined the Oi 1 and 2 units and the Takahama 3 and 4 units in Fukui Prefecture when Mr. Kobayashi was president. And started commercial operation of four nuclear power plants, greatly increasing the ratio of power generation by nuclear power plants.

Kobayashi then served as chairman from 1985 to 1997.

In 1987, Kobayashi was renowned for the resignation of former chairman Yoshishige Ashihara, who was the honorary chairman and had a strong influence in the company, at the time of the board of directors, and changed management. This dismissal drama has been referred to as the “Kanden 2.26 Incident” since that date.

Mr. Kobayashi was chairman of the Federation of Electric Power Companies and chairman of the management committee of NHK.
