Photovoltaic panels installed on the roof of a garage in Strasbourg - G. Varela / 20 Minutes

  • The Eurometropolis is launching a call for expressions of interest for a project of 16,000 solar panels in the Zénith car park in Strasbourg.
  • This must contribute to achieving the objective of a 100% carbon-free city by 2050.
  • Solar energy is expected to represent 12% of all of our energy needs in 2050.

The Eurometropolis solar park could soon be at its zenith. The community plans to install nearly 16,000 photovoltaic panels in the parking lot of the Zénith concert hall in Strasbourg. More specifically, on nearly four hectares, shades (shelters) for cars equipped with solar panels could be installed. A choice justified by Thierry Willm, director of the “energy mission” at the Eurometropolis because “it is the largest parking area in one piece, in our heritage. The idea is to reach 5 megawatts peak (Mgwp), which would almost double the current photovoltaic power of the eurometropolis, estimated at 6 MWp. Or nearly 2,000 equivalent homes.

For this, a call for expressions of interest (AMI) is launched. The eurometropolis offers an occupation of the site for a period of 20 to 30 years. This installation is part of the 100% renewable energy objective by 2050. “To achieve this, we will have to continue to further diversify the range of local energy mix. We don't put all our eggs in one basket, ”illustrates Thierry Willm. For this, the specialist relies on a dozen local renewable energies available. “But to have a low-carbon territory in 2050, we will have to save a lot of energy, halve our need and then cover them as much as possible with all the renewable energies on the territory. The share of solar energy should represent in 2050 in the 12% of the totality of our energy needs. "

Set an example to motivate

The Eurometropolis wants to set an example, to show that it is possible, for communities, private sector companies and even individuals, because there is an emergency. “We know that the electrical needs will increase enormously, continues Thierry Willm. In electric mobility, homes ... There will be plenty of electricity available. ”

Solar panels on thousands of m2 on the roofs of the warehouses of the Strasbourg Transport Company (CTS), digital solar cadastre, experimentation with solar panels on a body of water…. Private, municipal initiatives of the Eurometropolis are multiplying. Other projects, also private, are in the cards. And maybe even solar panels in the car parks of hypermarkets. The Local Urban Planning Plan (PLU) could also, in the long term, oblige, on new surfaces, (built or parking), to plan from the outset to install photovoltaic panels.

And this should increase with the low prices of photovoltaic panels divided by 10 in ten years according to Thierry Willm, but also the increase in EDF prices. "It is an investment" ridiculous ". An investor knows what a solar installation costs, the panels are guaranteed for 30 years, we know the amount of sunshine, it's a rent… ”

The idea is launched to potential investors but it will take another two years or so before seeing the shade shades with solar panels on the Zenith parking lot.
