The former head of security of Iberdrola Antonio Asenjo said on Monday at the National Court that the power company did not commission any report related to the president of ACS, Florentino Pérez . In addition, he has argued that the president of the company, José Ignacio Sánchez Galán , did not know that behind one of the companies with which he hired the prisoner José Manuel Villarejo was the retired commissioner.

Asenjo has declared for more than five hours - and will continue this Tuesday - before the Prosecutors of Anticorruption and Judge Manuel García Castellón , that in one of the pieces (number 17) of the Tandem case they investigate Iberdrola's contracts with the commissioner. The cause is under secret.

Asenjo, called as accused, has recognized the contracts signed with Cenyt, a police company. But he has argued that they were signed when he "knew" that the policeman was on leave and, therefore, could exercise particular activities. The key to the bribery accusation is Villarejo's active police status.

The imputation of the former security chief responds to a previous appearance by a director of Iberdrola who prepared a report that denounced the irregularities in the hiring of Villarejo and that was allegedly ignored by the power company. In his statement, Asenjo has not implicated the company's management. As for its director, he insisted that he was unaware of the police's connection with Cenyt's reports prepared for Iberdrola.

In a report prepared as a result of the opening of the investigation to Villarejo, the company detected that it had carried out 17 assignments to Villarejo between 2004 and 2017, in charge of the Corporate Security Directorate. The list of activities of the commissioner for the company chaired by Galán is varied, and would range from espionage tasks - among others, to the president of ACS - as an attempt to discredit environmental groups that were blocking power projects. Asenjo has recognized part of the work, but has argued that on all occasions he believed he was complying with the law.
