Consumer spending on candy in Germany reached around 102 euros per person last year.

This came according to estimates by the Federal Association of Desserts Industry in Germany, which was published today, days before the start of the activities of the candy exhibition in the city of Cologne.

The association explained that each consumer bought with this amount about 31 kg of chocolate, baked goods, ice cream, or snacks.

Sales of the sector stabilized last year at 12.5 billion euros. The sector has suffered from the significant increases in the prices of raw materials such as cocoa, and also from the turmoil in the export sector, which is of great importance to German manufacturers.

"One out of every chocolate bar we produce in Germany is exported," said Bastian Fassen, chairman of the association's board of directors.

Germany could increase the value of its candy exports by about 3% in 2019 despite the difficult circumstances, which include for example the imminent exit of Britain from the European Union (Brexit).

German and international candy companies will participate in the Cologne exhibition by displaying their new products from next Sunday, and many of these companies will count on snacks on the go.
Many companies also intend to give a sustainable smear to their products by focusing on natural ingredients or alternative packaging.
