One of the measures to reduce fine dust is to charge a fine of KRW 250,000 for old diesel vehicles entering Seoul's Great Gate. However, it is controversial to cut the penalty by half in just one month.

When an old diesel car that emits a lot of pollutants such as fine dust enters the main gate of Seoul, real-time surveillance cameras catch it. A fine of 250,000 won was imposed on these vehicles.

In a month after the crackdown, the number of cases of obsolete cars in the four gates was reduced by about 30%.

However, old diesel cars are mainly owned by the common people, and a complaint of 250,000 won was too expensive.

At the State Council last month, Mayor Park Won-soon called for lowering the fine, and the president ordered a review.

At the end of last year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has issued an amendment to the Enforcement Decree of the relevant law to reduce the current 500,000 fines to 200,000 won.

The head of the municipality can add or subtract half of this amount, so the actual penalty can be lowered to 100,000 won.

Environmental groups have criticized their policy will to reduce fine dust.

[Ezion / Environmental Movement Coalition Energy Climate Commissioner: The penalty is minimal. There is no doubt that citizens will follow the (dust reduction policy) bindingly.]

However, criticism that criticism should not increase the burden of ordinary people due to excessive penalties is controversial.
