  • Promotion: These are Renfe's rivals to compete in the AVE

Little by little more details are known about the launch of the low cost AVE that Renfe will put into circulation on April 6, the one named AVLO, which will allow you to buy tickets to travel between Madrid and Barcelona for a minimum price of 10 euros and 5 euros for children under 14 years.

The amount of the new service tickets will range between 10 and 60 euros depending on the demand that each place has at each moment, at least that will be the proposal that Renfe plans to approve at the meeting of his board of directors on Wednesday , Dec. 18.

The public railway company will begin to operate the AVLO with a commercial offer of two daily frequencies per direction , although it plans to expand its circulation until adding five at the end of 2020, precisely for when the liberalization of train transport and the entry of competitors, according to the president of the public operator, Isaías Táboas , in two interviews with El País and La Vanguardia .

With the launch of this service, Renfe thus gives the 'starting gun' to the race towards the cheap AVE, given that the aforementioned new operators that will enter the railway next year, SNCF and Trenitalia , have already advanced their intention to do so With trains at affordable prices.

Precisely, by launching AVLO in April, Renfe seeks to take a few months ahead of its future competitors. In fact, he plans to start selling low cost tickets at the end of January.

In addition, the public operator will start its cheap AVE on the Madrid-Barcelona line, the most mobile passenger corridor in the country, which has more competition with the plane and other modes of transport, and one of the three that next year will be they open at the entrance of new operators, along with the corridor to Levante and the AVE that connects Madrid with Seville and Malaga.

1 million travelers

Renfe is confident that the new service achieves one million travelers a year in the first two years in service. According to the president of the company, these passengers will be 'stolen' mainly from those who are currently traveling by car and among the groups that do not take the AVE for a price issue, such as families or young people.

In line with this objective is the initiative to put a price of 5 euros for tickets for children under 14 traveling with an adult.

The launch of a cheap AVE constitutes, together with digitalization and internationalization , one of the pillars of the strategic plan that Renfe develops to prepare for the end of its monopoly and the arrival of competition. The company is confident that this new service will generate 20% of its total revenue over a ten-year horizon.
