The failure had been announced for several days already, it became official this Wednesday at night. Israeli MPs failed to agree on the name of a prime minister. Neither Benyamin Netanyahu, in power for more than ten years, nor Benny Gantz, his main opponent, have managed to win the support of a majority of elected officials. Parliament was dissolved and new elections were called for March 2, 2020.

This election will be the third in less than a year. Israel is plunged into a political crisis and nothing says that these next elections will be the solution to get out. After the elections of March already, Benyamin Netanyahu had failed to form a parliamentary majority and had caused the dissolution of Parliament. This time, the outgoing Prime Minister again failed. But his main opponent, Benny Gantz also had a chance : without more success.

In a video released Wednesday night, Netanyahu promised his supporters to "win" the upcoming elections. The outgoing head of government fighting for his political survival should run a field campaign, contrasting with the last two where he was more present on social networks than with voters.

Benny Gantz has gained weight ...

But Benyamin Netanyahu is also facing a more experienced opponent. Novice in politics a year ago, Benny Gantz has managed to maintain the unity of his training and to win in the landscape. Recent polls give him a slight advantage, but they do not show much evolution in the balance between the two camps. And while this third campaign is just beginning, the prospect of a fourth is already mentioned.

It has been nearly nine months since Israel sought a government and the parties are blaming themselves for this new failure. In a video posted on social media in the evening, before the expiry of the deadline given to the Knesset, Benyamin Netanyahu accused the main coalition of the outgoing parliament, Bleu-Blanc, for " creating a whirlwind of political maneuvering ." " They want to hide the fact that they have done everything possible to prevent the establishment of a broad-based national unity government, " he said.

Netanyahu responsible for the crisis

" Keep some lies for the campaign, " Blue-White quickly told Benyamin Netanyahu. The training of Benny Gantz accuses the head of government of wanting immunity, while he has been indicted for corruption, fraud and breach of trust, and to focus his personal interest rather than that of the country.

The "kingmaker" Avigdor Liberman , who, with eight deputies, could have brought a majority to any of the candidates for the position of prime minister, refers the two groups back-to-back. Neither Likud nor Blue-White wanted a government of national unity, says the former defense minister. But according to a poll released by a television channel Tuesday night, for voters, the first person responsible for this crisis is Benyamin Netanyahu.
