Roger Hallam, co-founder of the climate movement Extinction Rebellion, considers the German attitude to the Holocaust harmful. "The extent of this trauma can paralyze," warned Hallam in a conversation with TIME. "That prevents you from learning."
In talks with DIE ZEIT, the 53-year-old Briton returns several times to the Holocaust. "The fact is that in our history, millions of people have been regularly killed under dire circumstances," Hallam said. He cites the genocide in the Congo as an example: "The Belgians came to the Congo in the late 19th century and decimated it."
Genocide, the climate activist, has been around again and again over the past 500 years. "To be honest, you could say: this is an almost normal event." For him, too, the Holocaust is " just another fuckery in human history, " said Hallam - "just another shit in human history."
The complete talk with Roger Hallam can be found starting this Thursday at the kiosk in the new issue of ZEIT - or online here .
