This is an unprecedented sentence. The story of an Israeli soldier who shot and killed a Palestinian teenager in Gaza in July 2018 during the "March of Return". The sentence was handed down this week by an Israeli military court. According to Hamas ruling in Gaza, 327 people were killed by the Israeli army during the protest movement launched in Gaza in March 2018.

On July 13, 2018, Othman Helles was one of the participants in the " March of Return " in the Gaza Strip. According to images posted on social networks, the 15-year-old climbed the fence between the Palestinian enclave and Israeli territory. An Israeli army sniper then opened fire causing the death of the young Palestinian.

According to the Israeli army, the soldier did not receive permission from his commanders. He " shot without respecting the rules of engagement and the instructions he had received, " she said in a statement.

Under an agreement to plead guilty, he was sentenced to one month in prison - a sentence that will be commuted to work for the benefit of the military - a probationary period and a demotion to the rank of private.

But for the Israeli organization defending human rights B'Tselem, the army remains resistant to investigating the actions of its soldiers. A dozen investigations, she said, were opened on the dead during " the March of the return " . And she points out that in the case of this soldier, the charge was that of disobedience and not the more serious one of the death of a teenager.
