Pokebell service ends today, disappears in over 50 years since birth, September 30, 11:55

In the 1990s, pager services with more than 10 million contracts and social phenomena were completed in 30 days, and disappeared in over 50 years.

Tokyo TeleMessage, which is the only nationwide paging service using a pager nationwide, will end in 30 days as the number of users decreases.

Pager started in 1968 at the time, and since it was able to display numbers, the use of “0840” and “Good morning” to send a message was expanded to the younger generation.

Became familiar with the nickname Pokebell, and it became a social phenomenon, with users calling each other “Bell Friend”. In 1996, the peak number exceeded 10 million.

However, with the spread of mobile phones, the number of users decreased, and NTT Docomo, which had been operating on a nationwide scale in 2007, terminated the service.

Currently, only Tokyo TeleMessage provides services in Tokyo, Saitama, Kanagawa, and Chiba prefectures, but the number of users is less than 1500, so we decided to end the service.

The pager will disappear in over 50 years, but the company says that the radio waves used by the pager will continue to be used as disaster prevention radio for local governments.
