Clashes between Israeli policemen and the faithful on the esplanade of the Mosques, high place of tension in Jerusalem, made dozens of wounded Palestinians Sunday, August 11, 2019, day of important commemorations Jewish and Moslem. AHMAD GHARABLI / AFP

Amman calls on Israel's ambassador to denounce "violations" in Jerusalem, following clashes on the esplanade of the Mosques on August 11, the first day of Eid al-Adha Muslim and during the Jewish religious festival Ticha Beav. In Israel, a government source, it is sufficient at this stage to confirm that the Israeli ambassador to Amman Amir Weissbrod has been summoned to the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Seen from Israel, the subject of relations with Amman is particularly sensitive. Since 1967, Jordan has overseen the agreement that non-Muslims are not allowed to pray on the esplanade of the Mosques, the Temple Mount, holy place for both Muslims and Jews.

This year, the Muslim festival of sacrifice and Tisha Beav the commemoration of the destruction of the two temples fell the same day. An extremely rare calendar coincidence.

After hesitation and the protests of the nationalist right, the Israeli government allowed visits of Jewish worshipers to the esplanade of the mosques which led to clashes between Muslims and the Israeli police force .

Homeland Security Minister Gilad Erdan said the deal is unfair. With the help of God, he added in an interview, it must be changed so that Jews can pray in this holy place.

A little sentence that triggered the anger of the Jordanians. Recall that two years ago the establishment of security gates around the esplanade of the Mosques had caused a crisis between Israel and Jordan. In the end, the Israeli government had to give way.
