Milk powder mountain in Europe almost eliminated

The milk powder stocks that the European Commission has bought since 2015 have shrunk enormously. Of the original mountain of 380,000 tons, 22,000 tons remain after the last 80,000 tons auction.

After the abolition of milk quotas in 2015, livestock farmers started producing more milk, resulting in lower prices. Brussels then set up a scheme allowing member states to buy up part of the surplus of skimmed milk powder from their farmers at a fixed price.

This fixed price was released last year in order to prevent new price decreases and to stabilize the market. "Balance in the market has always been our priority in this process and we now see that our warehouses are becoming empty without being on the market as many predicted," said Irish EU agricultural commissioner Phil Hogan.

The minimum price per 100 kilos has increased by 10 euros last month. The next safe is scheduled for January 24.
